Mrs. Know-It-All

It never fails. Whenever you feel pretty good about yourself something happens that makes you feel very, very small. I've been a member of an online sewing community for the past five years. I absolutey loved the site and it's members and spent many happy hours there looking at people's projects, showing my own and chatting about sewing. I even ran the Expert Forum (a title I was never comfortable with because I'm certainly not an expert) for several years - until my work load became so great that I could no longer handle it. Still, I was very active on the message boards when I was able. I'm certainly not a sewing expert - I will be the first one to tell you that. Instead, I consider myself a sewing student - always studying, always learning, always experimenting. Sewing does come naturally to me, that I will admit. Even back in Home Ec my fellow students always asked me for help. Not because I knew everything but because I was always finished before everyone else.

I'm no longer participating at the site but am still lurking, looking at people's projects and keeping up with what's going on. Now I wish I had just made a clean break. It's pretty humiliating to find out that while you thought you were being helpful, answering people's questions, so many thought you were just being a know-it-all and blowing your own horn. I wish I could go back and delete everything I've ever written. Actually, I could - but that would be entirely misconstrued. Then people would say that I was worried about someone stealing my ideas. They aren't my ideas at all, just things I've learned over the years. Luckily, the way the site is growing I know that I will disappear into cyberspace in short order - a small comfort.

Last week, Mary Beth and I were joking that, if left to our own devices, we might become sewing hermits. Right now, that sounds like a pretty swell idea. I have a small note hung to the right of my desk that reads "sewing washes from the soul the dust of everyday life". Now that's good advice. Time to buck up and sew something.

That is so sad! Why do people have to be nasty? I think with the internet, people (more easily) forget that real people are involved.

Well, I would like to thank you for your contribution over "at that place that won't be mentioned". Hope that helps a bit?

Sorry you are having such a bad time Gigi!! I'm not sure why some people are so bothered with what other people are doing??? I think you were only kind and so helpful. I know you've helped me and given me a TON of inspiration!! I love to see your projects and am glad that at least you have your blog so I can follow them over here. It's too bad a few people can ruin it for everyone else. Thanks for all of the help you've given me!! -Jeanette

Gigi, I feel exactly the same way. There was a recent post, after the most egregious ones were deleted, that said, good riddance to those who use that site to "toot their own horns, proclaim that they are published in magazines" and so forth. That comment was clearly meant to be hurtful and to push away many members who had contributed, with no remuneration or acknowledgement, for years - 5 in your case, less in mine and others. It worked. You know what my less-than-noble reaction was? "**** them, and the horse they rode in on." You were always gracious and helpful on that site, and you will be missed, along with many others, I'm sure. But hey, life goes on, and to paraphrase one of my favorite sayings, Life is too short to waste on such nonsense.

It is a sad commentary on human nature to know that a few people out of the many who use that site could be so cruel and cause the loss of precious resources - everyone suffers. You are so generous with your time and expertise; please, no need for modesty - you are a talented lady.
Put on that beautiful smile we see in your avatar and hold your head up high because there is no need to give someone else the power to make you feel bad. You are appreciated and I hope you continue to use your talents to help others.

Gosh I'm so sorry Gigi. I'm not really certain I even know what is going on at the said site, but I do know I appreciate all the time you & others have put into the site to make a valuable resource for the sewing community. I will continue to follow your blog and learn from your sewing adventures. You'll be missed as will the others that decide it's time to move on, but if you're not happy, then it's definitely time for a change.

Gigi - I am very thankful for your advice and helpfulness. Currently I have 3 versions of the same KS skirt - because I saw it first on your old site. Also recently recut a jeans jacket to add pockets per your article in Threads. Your blog is bookmarked and I look to see if you've posted anything new daily.

Thank you for all you do to encourage and enlighten the sewing community.

Gorgeous things I saw that post too and was gobsmacked - I *bought* those magazines because PR members were in them!! I never saw any horn tooting, but I sure do see one hell of a lot of jealousy surfacing now, that seemed to be just beneath the surface. There is a lot of mediocrity wherever we go, and it really is lonely at the top.

I dont think any of you should leave. I love the divas, love Gigi's expert forum - and Gigi, don't mistake the vocal minority for the popular opinion. I am so sick of the really bright stars being attacked, I don't know what you call it in the US but here in Aus we call it the 'tall poppy syndrome', people just have to cut others down.

Contribute in the face of them, please, they'll soon shut up when they realise they haven't won and are stuck with themselves.

Hi Gigi,

I second Katy also. Don't let the small minded win. I have so enjoyed your input at PR. I have been teaching sewing for 17 years from a business in my home. You and other "experts" at pr and your blogs have been my inspiration and source of so many good tips. I have so enjoyed your insights and clear explanations. I hope you will keep posting reviews and encourage the others at Sewing Divas to do the same. Sharing ideas and successes helps us all. Hold your head up high and ignore the low minded people.

yeah, obviously the few who feel you are "tooting your own horn" forgot that OTHER people started threads to congratulate you on being published in Threads! And even if you had announced it yourself, who cares? Nothing wrong with being proud of an accomplishment!

I am a very, very novice sewer and I used to frequent PR, but left because I found much of what went on to be very unhelpful. I do still enjoy reading your reviews, and I *love* seeing your finished garments!

Now when I need help with something sewing-related, I usually go to craftster... there's not as much expertise, but there's a lot of talent and creativity on those boards and some very helpful and fun people.

Gigi, I saw that horrible post and I am still in shock that someone would say that to you. I wondered why I rarely see your posts anymore except for a comment here and there about Project Runway.

Oh how I miss your expertise and I feel your pain and MaryBeth's, along with everyone else who has been flamed and slammed on PR. I remember a couple of ramble rousers on SW also. One attempted to destroy a well-known sewing teacher. I just don't get it. But I wanted you to know that I admire and respect all the Divas and most everyone else on PR. It's the few unhappy people who make it rough for everyone.

I have lurked over at the "other site" for quite a while now. This whole situation is just horrible. I hate that a few people hurt you and the others by what they said. I try to teach my daughter about jealousy and how hurtful it can be. This is a prime example. Know that there are plenty of people out there like me who have appreciated every bit of advice and help that you gave. I never once thought you or any of the other Diva's were being boastful or superior. You all were nothing but kind and generous. You have replied to me and given me help in the past and I am most grateful for that. I selfishly wish that you would not leave. I have never found a forum where there was so much generosity and support. I hate to see it all change.

I recently saw a television spot that talked about how normally friendly teenage girls can turn vicious in their online conversations, largely in part because of the anonymity and distance that the Internet provides. We are separated from the people we are interacting with and so it feels like there are no consequences for saying nasty things. It seems the same is true for some adults as well.

I offer relationship advice through my website so I could be criticized as you have been. Though my visitors seem very appreciative, I have learned to avoid some online forums where there seems to be a culture of criticize first and think later. Maybe someday we'll all learn that the people on the other end of that post are living breathing folks with feelings -- the same as if they were standing right in front of you.

Come to think of it, that would make a good article.

I 100% understand your decision to leave. I've noticed a big change on the boards in the past few months, as well. There seems to be more bitching and less sewing! Whatever the outcome of this situation, I just want to say a big THANK YOU-- you've been a huge inspiration to me, and I've appreciated everything you've shared.

Gigi,

You have been so generous and giving of your time, and I think of you every time I look at my little orange Singer sitting in my sewing room.

If it wasn't for you and your expertise, warmth, compassion, generosity with your time and talents, I'm not so sure I would have joined "the site that shall not be named." And I'm not so sure now that I'll renew it.

I think that the owner of that site has acted without thinking at times (deleting posts and links), which in turn spurred some of the hatefulness that has recently been exhibited. That may be the downfall of her site. And sadly, some people feel that since we really don't "know" each other, that they can let loose and say hateful things that they normally wouldn't say in person.

All I really have to say is karma - karma will come back to them someday, and by taking the high road in whichever form works for you - staying there or going - you will be rewarded. As you already are being.

I will check in here frequently and at the Sewing Divas as I love seeing your work. I said it before (I think) but you inspire me, and I admire you.

Warm regards,
Claire (aka rosephreak)

I hope that you don't give the naysayers too much more of your time - they're not worth it. I love seeing the projects you post on your blog and the Sewing Divas blog.

Hi,
Found your blog a couple weeks ago and really enjoy it. Loved seeing your sewing room(s).

I went through a similar experience on a group thing several years ago. It finally dawned on me that I was spending way too much time stressing over "virtual" people and I dropped it. I went into internet "lurk" mode and now only recently started commenting and joining in again.

It's a shame some ruin it for all esp. those with no bad intentions.

So exactly where is FashionHell, Florida. I only ask because I live on Florida's east coast, just south of cape canaveral in Not Quite The Fashion Mecca, Florida.

I don't know what happened exactly, because I only frequent a few areas, but I think it's a shame. I was so excited to find this community, with so many helpful experts and advanced sewers, and now I feel like its all going downhill :( Anyway, thanks for the inspiration. Hi Gigi,
I don't comment very often, but I check your blog almost every day, and I really appreciate and enjoy your insights.

I'm part of another fandom, and your post reminded me of something that only recently happened. For years there had been contention and bad feeling between two groups of people who chose to interpret a specific situation differently. Recently, someone went back through all of the hurtful postings, emails, etc. and was able to show that most, if not all, of the contention causing words came from a single person. What people had considered a divided community had in fact been the result of one very malicious and wrong person.

So my point is, please don't be discouraged by the rude people. Just because they are loud doesn't make them right. I'm sure that most of the people who use that website do NOT agree with them. Unfortunately we all tend to be more vocal in our criticism than in our praise.

*Hugs!* and good luck!

You have taught me more about sewing through your reviews, answers to my questions, and your very generous sharing over the past three years than I had learned in all my years sewing on my own. I want to say "thank you" and that I am very happy that I can find you and your generous sharing and sewing advice here. BTW, how is your empty nest? My DH and I just returned from visiting our DD and she said "Mom, I've been worried that you and Daddy won't have anything to do while I'm gone." We answered at the same time- "Don't worry." ;)

Wow, Gigi, I am clueless as to exactly what has happened, but now I understand why I haven't seen you lately on Pattern Review.

I surmise that some mean, jealous, people made nasty comments on your work.

So now I need to tell you - if it weren't for your website and your presence on PatternReview, the following would NOT have happened for me:

1. I would never have discovered Kwik Sew patterns without you.

2. I would never have started my website if it were not for your example.

3. I would never have developed my skill with knits if it were not for you. (I have a long way to go, but before I 'met' you, I had hardly worked with knits because they intimidated me!)

So THERE, Gigi! Those are just a few of the things, off the top of my head, for which you've, personally, made a positive, difference in my sewing life.

And, you are even a presence in my fabric storage area! How could I forget that lovely poly black/silver knit that I bought years ago from you (from the "Hutch" when you were selling some of your excess inventory). I promise, I will make that into something for the upcoming holiday season.

Anyway, I echo everyone elses supportive comments here. You have contributed SO much, so generously, to so many of us. Thanks!

It looks like I will be number 68 to say how much you will be missed- not that we will not all be here at your blogsite constantly. Please add my thanks to the evergrowing list of people who REALLY appreciate all of your generous assistance. I often marvel at how you (and Ann and MB, and Debbie etc etc) find the time to help us work out our silly problems. Please remember that the ones who appreciate you far outnumber the petty, jealous ones!

I also have to chime in - y'all will be missed! I got back into garment sewing about a year or so ago and stumbled onto that nameless site. I found your advice and the advice of the other divas invaluable.

Because of my job, I haven't been able to spend as much time there since the summer so I'm a little out of the looper ;) But, suffice it to say that whenever I saw someone had published an article I made sure to grab that magazine. It also made me feel like I was truly blessed to be part of a sewing forum where so many sewists of different skill levels and expertise could share with one another.

Big hugs!

PS - I consider myself a diva in everything I do too - just figured the Sewing Divas rightfully felt the same way.

Oh, Gigi. I'm so sorry. I didn't stumble across what you were talking about, but I can't believe that anyone who has met you -- either in cyberspace or real life -- would think that you were blowing your own horn. You've been so generous with your knowledge and such a positive influence on the sewing community. You've been an inspiration to me since I started sewing. I'll have to keep an eye on you here now.

Gigi, all I have to say is said site is just not the same these days without you.

To echo the many posters before me, I always thought your input was worth its weight in gold. I am so glad I found you (and the rest of the gang here) so I can still peer in on your sewing escapades. Thanks for continuing to share.

Laura

P.S. Being a sewing hermit is simply not you!

Gigi, that is about the meanest thing I have ever heard. It most definitely does not apply to you. I have never seen anything come from you that wasn't nicely said and with the kindest thoughts. **** to anyone who is so nasty, mean and jealous.

Gigi: I've just come upon your blog and am elated to know there's a place to follow your sewing and get your extremely helpful sewing tips. I'm a FOPR (I'm a beginner, only posted a few reviews) and lurk on PR every day. I had noticed the absence of your postings and hoped you hadn't left PR. You were always generous and gracious with your help and will be missed tremendously. I hope one day you and others who have left will reconsider and rejoin the PR community. It's horribly sad when the insecure, mean spiritedness of a few hurts so many others.

I have been reading a few blogs and picking up on the recent activity. I decided I didn't want to know what was going on and have stopped reading the message boards at that site. I really only visited them ever so often. I certainly had no idea any of this was aimed toward you.

I am truly sorry to hear this. I recall first joing PR and you along with several others gave helpful feedback on my reviews. I even sent personal messages to you asking for your help which was given and I appreciated.

I hope that you will use your blog to continue to inform and even educate those of us, who like you, love to sew and continue to learn more about a craft they are good at. I will always appreciate your feedback and tutoring.

Sorry that "--itty things happen to nice people".

Oh, Gigi, I'm so very sorry!! I have only been active on the site in question for about a year and you were the reason I became active. I have learned so much from you in the past year. Your word is gold to me.

As a fellow Project Runway fan, your kindness was so evident when you offered to pm me about an episode you had just seen in Florida but wouldn't be shown for a couple of hours in AZ. You didn't want to spoil the surprise for others! I know I was more thrilled to get a personal message from Gigi than the news of the show.

There might be some bad feelings when you left a community where you have contributed tremendously for so many years. But with so many "gigi fans" to support your blogging, it won't be a solitary journey. :) I am particularly excited that I can read your projects, tips, and even your rants at this single site, YOUR site, without searching up and down. Happy blogging and sewing!

Gigi - ihope you are getting lots of encouragement from all those messages from those of us who appreciate your work AND your attitude. Although I lurk, rather than post, at all the sewing sites I want to say how inspiring I find your work. Always glad to see you in THREADS as well!

Gigi,
I have seen some of the comments mentioned, not all, and have been dismayed at the way the community is going.

I am a lousy and often frustrated sewist, but keep trying because of you all. I've stuck to attempting sewing for 4 years now because of advice and help you and others on PR, and mostly from the inspiration you give through your finished garments. Even dh feels like he "knows" you all.

I am trying to use this as a big hint that I should spend less time reading and more time *doing* I will continue to visit your blog, and that of the other divas (as well as PR for the archived stuff you all have left there).

I have never see seen you be anything other than sweet and generous (even to my often inappropriate to tell inlaw stories) and you will be missed.

Keep sewing and enjoy that new stash room your son vacated!

Hi Gigi,
Another semi-lurker at the sewing site that cannot be named, who didn't know what went on but all of a sudden couldn't find you. I don't care to know the details. I read your stuff. Keep on saying it.
I too read your stuff when it wasn't pertinent to my particular project because you were so willing to share whatever expertise you had. You were always so witty and generous.

You deserve a healthy sense of confidence, because we can never accomplish anything without it.
I'm not immune to infantile emotions. I'm barely out of the sandbox at 61. When I have that jealous/resentment flash, I recognize it for what it is. Duh, someone knows something I don't know - I want to banish them to Siberia so I can look like I'm the one in the know. Except, when I banish everyone who says or does something smart, then I end up all alone with only myself to play with and not looking too bright.
Today I prefer to learn from and enjoy those sources instead of cutting off my nose to spite my face.
So, keep the good stuff coming Gigi. Keep your spunk and your humor and you go girl.

It also made me have a mini-cringe when the site that must not be named started charging for this, that and the other. Wetcanvas, the art site which has a much larger subscriber base than that other site about sewing, doesn't charge - they have a community.I hope they never do charge.
BTW, not everybody is going to like us. That's the way it is.

Stitchkid.

Just wanted to let you know that I'm one of the many people who benefited from your contributions to the forums, and from your reviews. I haven't been hanging out there much lately, but it's really disheartening that all the really helpful people are being driven away by people who don't usually help answer questions. I'll take the helpful people any day over the people who just belittle others. :)

I'm sorry that one person's bitterness has affected so many positive members of the site. As others have said, I've never known you (or the other Sewing Divas) to "toot your own horn". I think it's really awesome that I "know" someone who's published in Threads (Threads should think so too: I never bought their magazine until I knew authors in it). :)

Anyway, thanks for all the hints, tips, and exceedingly useful information you've made available! You're definitely appreciated by the majority!

Hey, Gigi-- I'm late with this comment. I have no idea what was said but I don't have any problem imagining it given some of the other posts I've read lately. I'm really sorry it's come to this. You have always been helpful and kind and I have so much appreciated your expertise. Yes, I said "expertise" You clearly have an extensive background in what PR used to be about, that would be sewing, and have a talent for sharing that information and knowledge with others. I have noticed a change in the site over the last several months and am hesitant to post lest I draw attention to myself by saying something unintentionally offensive. I'd like to tell you to ignore them and come on back but I understand the hurt feelings and the desire to just walk away. Thanks for all your help over the years. Susan C

Gigi, You should be proud of your accomplishments! IT is AWESOME! And don't let the jealous comment of one person take away the pride that you are entitled! You are a very talented sewist! I personally find myself inspired by you and the other "divas" incredible garments, and I'm just a beginner...but with sewing, as with life.......the sky is the limit, so aim high! Gigi,
I only wanted to drop a line to tell you "Thank you" for all the help you have been to me. You are someone who would go way out of their way to help and losing you is a huge loss for any community. What was said on PR was a really low blow and rather disturbing,so I am not surprised by your decision and hurt feelings. What can I say... You have class and some just don't... Don't let them hurt you!
Thank you again!

Gigi,

I missed the whole mess over on PR and can't imagine what got said that made you and Ann (and I'm not sure who else) leave in the past couple of weeks. It is a complete shame. I am so glad you have your own blogpage for us to see what you are up to. Your input over at PR was invaluable. (Ann's too.) I am so sad that whatever happened was ugliness directed at such generous spirits.

Oh, Gigi... It certainly wasn't you. You have always come across to me as so kind, perhaps innocent. I'm sorry that you have been hurt. But, it doesn't look like you have lost your fan base at all! Congratulations on moving forward!

I want to thank you for all that I have learned from you at the other place. You always were generous and kind to people, answering questions, offering help.

My mother used to say when someone had said something mean to me: 'Consider the source.'

If someone is mean to someone who is as nice as you've been to people - well they can't be so nice, can they?
Glad to see you blogging and again, thanks for all your kind help I've read! Utz

Gigi,
I really hate to see you leave that sewing site. I have really enjoyed you work and helpful advice over the years.. I will be book marking you blog to keep up on what you are up too.

I have no idea what has been going on over there I have be lurking and posting once in a while.

Well, I'm oblivious. I didn't see the post(s) in question. How could anyone who spent any time on PR think you were other than genuine in your efforts to help people out?

I have to agree with the previous comments that say don't let a few people influence your mood or actions. Perhaps just review, & keep your profile w/ a link to your blogs.

Gigi I am so sorry to learn you have left PR, I think it is poorer for it. I don't know what went on, I missed all the nastiness. But what ever it was I am sure it was not deserved. Some people use the internet as a place to dump all their bitterness and jealousy. They think no one will ever know, so they can dump their anger on the world.

I would hope you wouldn't let one angry bitter person keep you away from PR. The majority of the people enjoy your posts and want you there. I was thrilled to see you get published in Threads.

No matter what you do someone will tell you it is wrong. You just have to remember not everyone is worth listening to. This angry bitter person was not worth listening. to.

You and all the divas were shining lights on that site. I've been busy and haven't visited much in weeks but something was amiss when I surfed the boards today. Glad to find the missing knowledge here! The value and learning for me at the other site has declined this summer and now it is plummeting. I have to seriously rethink whether to renew, and I'm saddened that petty people can cause a community to lose so much.

I'm sorry you're not on PR anymore. I have spent a lot of time on that site in the last two years while I went through some medical issues and couldn't sew much. I almost considered reverting to lurking only when I heard some people complaining bitterly about people participating without posting reviews. But, I have many years of sewing experience and plenty to share. I think you will always have people with problems in any online community, and you just can't be intimidated by them. But, if it's too uncomfortable, I don't blame you for backing away. Your contribution, along with a few others, really made the site, so it's a loss for PR that you are no longer contributing. Thanks for all you did there. I'm trying to check in here as often as I can.

I am really annoyed that you ahve been attacked like that its just sooooo stupid and tiny minded. I have learned alot from your input on PR and I have to say that your instructionhas really lifted my game and I am very grateful for both the time that you put into doing it and for the talent that you have in doing it. DONT focus on those stupid and misguided people but on US who ARE very appreciative and enjoy the bits of your blog that lead us to feel that we know you a little and share in your triumphs and lows a little. regards Mem

I missed of all this, being an infrequent reader over at PR... but whenever something like this happens, my hubby has a favorite saying; "No good deed ever goes unpunished"! And it's just so true!

I just discovered your blog, and am really enjoying reading through it.

Gigi ~ I'm so sorry about what happened and very sad to see you go. I've been a member of that other site for years because of the generous sharing of knowlege by yourself and a few others It really is a shame that a select few can ruin something wonderful for everyone. Isn't that the way is always goes? All I can say is that I'm glad you're bolggn' because I sure miss you! Thanks for being you.

Like Barbara Bell (whom, BTW, I 'met' by link to her website through yours!), you taught me how to sew knits well, do a FBA and on knits (you recommended doing a 1" as the ma to ease in--yes!--and tissue-fitting doesn't work for a knit pattern). You showed me KS wasn't dowdy at all, helped me hem knits better without waviness, introduced me to WNTW, and inspired me endlessly. I too have a whole collection of KS A-line skirts based entirely on seeing how great you made them and had to have them too--they were the backbone of my work wardrobe last year, along with my beloved SIM twist top from you too. I even made bathrobes following your inspriation that they're great for gifts, and my in-laws have been delighted with you by proxy. We have similar body types and I followed your inspiration for my style. I miss your website too--my first place for inspiration. I've been off PR for 2 months due to moving and getting a home Internet connection in Brussels, so I missed the terrible brouhaha. As much as I will miss you there, your instincts tell you to go so just so you know I'm behind your decision 100%. Make yourself happy, sew and be online in the spot that does that for you. I'll see you here! --Katharine, formerly in Taipei TW, NL, and now in BE.

You have a heart of gold, and the sharing you have always done goes out to encourage and bless.

The care with which you do everything sets the bar high for the rest of us.

Thank you,
